It’s January 21, and if you’ve been into the box lately, you’ve likely felt it—that familiar shift in the air. The heavy breathing is a little louder, the chalk is flying a little faster, and the whiteboard talk has shifted from “what’s the WOD?” to “is this the year of the heavy snatch?”
With Open registration officially opening last week, the fitness world is buzzing. Naturally, the conversation often turns to the “other” big player in the game: HYROX. While HYROX is seeing meteoric growth (projecting over 1 million participants this season), there is still a fundamental difference in scale and impact when it comes to the CrossFit Open.
As we gear up for February 26th, let’s look at why the Open remains the undisputed heavyweight champion of global fitness participation.
1. The Affiliate Network vs. The Event Tour
The most significant difference in scale comes down to infrastructure.
- HYROX is a “roadshow.” It is a massive, high-production race that travels to major cities. If you want to race, you usually have to travel to a convention center in a city like Chicago or New York on a specific weekend.
- The CrossFit Open happens everywhere, all at once. Because of the thousands of CrossFit affiliates worldwide, the “venue” for the Open is your home gym.
In Anaheim, we don’t have to wait for a tour to come to town. We turn our own four walls into a global arena. This decentralized model allows the Open to reach hundreds of thousands of athletes simultaneously in over 150 countries.
2. The “Unified Moment.”
HYROX is a season-long circuit. An athlete in London might race in November, while an athlete in Anaheim might race in May. Their experiences are separated by months.
The Open is a three-week global holiday. When the workout is announced on Thursday night, the entire world—from the elite athletes in Cookeville to our 5:00 AM crew here in Anaheim—is staring at the same challenge. That simultaneity creates a digital and social scale that a traveling race cannot replicate.
3. The Breadth of the Test
While HYROX is a phenomenal test of aerobic power and “compromised running,” its format is standardized: the same 8 stations and the same 8 kilometers every single time.
The Open is “Larger in Scale” because its physical requirements are broader. To participate in the Open, you are preparing for:
- Weightlifting: (Snatches, cleans, overhead squats)
- Gymnastics: (Pull-ups, muscle-ups, handstand walks)
- Monostructural: (Rowing, jumping rope, shuttle runs)
The Open doesn’t just ask “how fast can you run?”; it asks “How many skills have you mastered?” This creates a much larger “learning curve” and a more diverse community of athletes, from 14-year-old teens to 70-year-old masters.

Why It Matters for CrossFit Anaheim
The scale of the Open isn’t just about “big numbers” on a leaderboard. It’s about the fact that you are part of something massive without having to leave your community.
When you hit that 26.1 workout here in Anaheim, you aren’t just a face in a crowd of 5,000 people at a convention center. You’re a leader in your own gym, cheered on by people who know your name, while your score contributes to a global story.
Friday Night Lights is coming. Whether you’re looking to see where you rank in the world or just want to prove something to yourself, there is no bigger stage than the one right here on our gym floor.
